The victim of a murder in which gay-porn star Luka Rocco Magnotta is the chief suspect has been identified as a college student from China who apparently was in a relationship with Magnotta.
Police in Montreal announced Friday that the victim is Lin Jun, a 33-year-old Chinese man who was attending Concordia University in that city, the Toronto Star reports. The murder occurred during the night of May 24-25, and Lin was last seen May 24 and was reported missing Tuesday, the paper notes.
He was stabbed to death and his body cut up, and portions of it were mailed to various locations in Canada. One foot, believed to belong to Lin, was sent to the headquarters of the nation’s Conservative Party in Ottawa, and a hand was mailed as well, intended for the Liberal Party but intercepted by police. A torso was found in a suitcase behind Magnotta’s apartment building in Montreal. Video purporting to depict the crime has been posted online, and police say they believe it is authentic. They have tried unsuccessfully to have it taken down.
Magnotta, 29, who is believed to have flown to Europe last weekend, is the subject of an international search. He may be in disguise, and he may already have returned to Canada, Montreal police commander Ian Lafrenière said at a press conference Friday, according to the National Post. Police plan to charge him with first-degree murder and interfering with the dignity of a dead body, said Lafrenière, who added that Magnotta and Lin were “engaged in sort of a relation.”
Magnotta has been in trouble with the law before. In 2005 he pleaded guilty to defrauding various retailers and stealing credit card information. He is also notorious for posting a video online showing kittens being suffocated and for writing racist entries for a white supremacist website.
