A transgender teen almost died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver.

The 16-year-old victim, who is still unidentified, was hit by a motorist Saturday at around 2:40 a.m. in front of the Luminarias Restaurant in Monterey Park, Calif., reports the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

In a written statement, police confirm the teen "was the victim of an assault and struck by a vehicle." Los Angeles news outlet KABC TV reports the victim is in serious but stable condition.

The victim's family, standing on the steps of the town's city hall, asked for the public's help Monday in finding the driver.

"I want help from the community, maybe someone saw something, they could come forward," said Fernando, the only name offered by the victim's uncle.

"My nephew is only 16 years old," he said through tears. "He has his whole life in front of him. I don't understand how somebody could just leave a human being on the side of the road and drive off."

Police and news outlets first reported the victim as male, but officials later confirmed the teen is a transgender woman.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call (626) 573-1311 or (800) 222-8477.
