As night fell in Vienna on Tuesday, day three of the XVIII International AIDS Conference, singer and AIDS activist Annie Lennox addressed a crowd of more than 15,000 who had gathered at Heldenplatzthe, near the city's center, for the official March and Rally for Human Rights. The Advocate spoke to marchers as they swarmed the streets:

Oliver Engel and Hugo Santos, 24, Madrid, Spain.
"We flew to
Vienna just for this march. As a gay couple, we are so often shaken by
fear. So we came here to show the world that we exist, that we love, and
that we will not be intimidated.
Adewie Dinyoh, 51, Cameroon,
Africa.
"As a Catholic sister, I lead a ministry for HIV-positive men
in Cameroon. We talk so much about their families, who surround them
with sadness and shame. But today, we celebrate - because life with HIV
can be rich and long and filled with hope.
Christine Biermann,
62, Vienna, Austria.
"I live a block away from the rally, and I've
never seen energy like this. I'm not sure that the people of Austria are
ready to face AIDS this boldly, but it's here, and we don't have a
choice."
Edwin Bernard, 34; with friends Nicholas Sumtel, 29 and
Matthew Weait, 25; London, England.
"I live in London, where I spend
much of my time blogging about the criminalization of HIV. It's lonely
work, so I use my computer to reach out to the world. Now, standing
here, the world has come to me."
Julian Rondsen, 24, Stuttgart, Germany
"I'm in awe.
Fifteen thousand people are out here with me, and it's so much to take
in. But I still wonder, why only 15,000? Why not more?"
Lydian
Mworeko, 29 and Dorothy Namutamba, 31,
"In Uganda, the 'solution' to
HIV [and] to being gay is to make it illegal. When will we understand
that the answer isn't criminalization? When will we have our march?"
