New York
City's Human Resources Administration has made $2.2
million in questionable payments in securing housing
for HIV-positive city residents during the past two
and a half years, according to an audit by the city
comptroller, Newsday reports. The agency even
reported paid $182,391 for hotel rooms for 26
HIV-positive people who had died, according to the
audit. Another $1 million went to vendors for clients
who did not sign housing registration logs, nearly $120,000
in fees were double-billed, and more than $417,000
paid for housing for people not listed in the
agency's housing database, the audit discovered.
City comptroller
William Thompson has ordered the agency to begin
recovering some of the funds. The Human Resources
Administration also has implemented a new card-swiping
system for clients to help keep better track of their
housing needs and housing usage.
