Increased HIV
prevention efforts could cut global infections in half

Boosted HIV prevention spending could cut HIV infections from 60 million to 32 million.

A report by officials with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS in the journal Science shows that expanding HIV prevention spending in the next 10 years by $122 billion could cut the estimated number of new global HIV infections between 2005 and 2015 from 60 million to 32 million. The extra spending would be cost-effective too, according to the report: Each new infection averted would cost about $3,900 but would save $4,700 in eventual treatment and care. Much of the burden for heightened HIV prevention funding would likely fall to Western nations, as developing countries could not afford the increased spending, according to the UNAIDS officials. But doing so would save millions of lives and reduce future outlays for HIV treatment programs, according to the report. (Advocate.com)
