The San Antonio
AIDS Foundation, which earlier this month halted patient
care at its skilled nursing and hospice facility because of
a $257,000 cut in its federal Ryan White grant, has
received enough funding through other sources to begin
to treat patients again, reports the San Antonio
Express-News. Bexar County, Texas, commissioners have
allocated $26,000 from the county's general fund to
SAAF, and the agency also has received $99,000 through
other county grants. SAAF, which was forced to lay off
five staff members, including two nurses, is now
working to rehire some of the employees and to begin
admitting some patients. David Ewell, SAAF's
executive director, says the agency will not be able
to fill all 36 of its beds, but notes it's unclear
exactly how many HIV patients the agency will be able
to treat with the new funds. (The Advocate)
