New York governor
Elliot Spitzer has proposed in his 2007 budget to
nearly triple spending on health and human services
programs in LGBT communities to $6 million, reports
365gay.com.
Previously the
executive budget has allotted $2.373 million for the LGBT
programs. The increased spending will go to LGBT programs
that provide services such as alcohol and substance
abuse treatment, violence prevention, and assistance
to crime victims and homeless youth.
The New York
State LGBT Health and Human Services Network will benefit
the most from the funding. The network includes more than 50
community-based organizations that serve LGBT communities in
almost all of the state's 62 counties. In the nine
years the state has been funding the network, more
than $22 million has been used to support and create
LGBT health and human services programs. (The
