 The Naked Truth: Calpernia Addams

Calpernia Addams, 37
Nashville
Likes: eyes
Dislikes: “I’m too tall and too big”

Calpernia Addams survived the crushing self-critiques that nearly drove her to suicide as a young man only to be faced with the physical scrutiny that comes with being a Hollywood TV personality. “When I look in the mirror I’m not happy with what I’m seeing,” says the transgender actress. “But I’ve come to accept and make the best of it.”

When it was announced in 2007 that Addams would star in Logo’s reality dating show Transamerican Love Story, she says that blogs buzzed with mean-spirited chatter about her transgender identity as well as her arms, lips, and genitalia. “People are brutal,” she says. “I just try not to take it too personally.” Addams and her business partner Andrea James collected the worst comments and read them in video on her website. The hurtful things people post “always sting,” Addams says, “but laughing is a coping mechanism I’ve learned.”

Addams is tough on her looks, which she describes as “supernatural.” “I couldn’t get the best plastic surgery that there was because I didn’t have a ton of money, so I’m not thrilled with the results,” she says, adding that she would only undergo surgery again to “naturalize” her image. But her present insecurities pale in comparison to the despair she says she felt as a child who looked in the mirror and saw a boy. “I always thought, You’re hideous, you’re hideous.” After she transitioned in 1993, Addams says the self-denigration toned down significantly. And yet, “when I see myself on-screen, all I can see are the flaws.”

As for her next transition—into a 40-something working actress—Addams says she’s ready. “I think as I get older I’m going to relax a little bit and stop worrying about being sexy and just try to be healthy and natural,” she says.

I guess that it is natural for post-op transsexual women to be overly critical of their bodies. I know that I am one who is. Calpernia is simply gorgeous. Beyond that, she has a keen wit, a find mind, and is a very competent business woman. (All that, in addition to her great talent as a performer.) My impression is that she is also a very nice human being. If she ever came to visit my hometown, I would take her to lunch, and welcome her into my home. I am so glad that we have the likes of Calpernia, Andrea James, and Lynn Conway to represent us publically. And, Calpernia, if you should happen to read this, please notice that all of the commentators say that you are beautiful--so in several witness let it be established. Terrie Donovan

Calperenia, You're simply BEAUTIFUL! And, its not only what is on the outside, but what is on the inside that is where your true beauty radiates from. Calpereina should be very proud of all that you have accomplished and where you are in life today. A very positive role model for many, many tranwomen everywhere of all ages.

Callie, you look amazing! I just want to hug you because you truly are beautiful and it's sad to hear those admissions from you. Your photos remind me of Dita Von Teese (and I love love LOVE her style). As someone who's overweight (hooray genetics!), I know a little what it's like to look in the mirror and hate what you see, and to be judged for it. Not to say my situation is the same as yours by any means... but my long-winded point is, people suck. I don't know if any women are truly happy with themselves. But at least you're trying, and you're brave enough to put yourself out there. You kick ass!

Being a Transsexual Myself, I really admire Calperenia. She may calim that she thinks she's not as beautiful as she wants, but she is GORGEOUS! -lol- I can usually tell when someone is a transsexual, and is trying to be stealth about it, but to be honest, If I had never read about Calpernia, and just randomly saw her on a movie or something, I really wouldn't Know. Anyways, Calpernia, Your Beautiful, quit being so hard on yourself! Your don't look Supernatural, You Look Super BEAUTIFUL!
