Born as James Lance Bass in Mississippi, Bass came out publicly on the cover of People magazine in 2006, and recounted his experiences as a closeted superstar in his biography, Out of Sync. He was honored for the move by HRC. Bass has become a public figure in the LGBT movement toward equality, endorsing such organizations as GLAAD, GLSEN, and Lambda Legal.
