A friend of mine brought this story to my attention and I felt I had to write and offer some support to the couple involved.
I think Thomas Beatie and his wife, Nancy, are a very strong couple, with so much love to give their unborn daughter. There are so many people in this world who have children for all the wrong reasons (to claim more money off welfare, to save a marriage, etc.) so the fact that these two people are going through so much adversity due to what society deems as right, in my eyes, makes them perfect parents. It would have been very easy for them to decide not to bring a child into this world, especially after the narrow-minded comments and the manner in which medical "professionals" have treated them.
I cannot have children, as I have been diagnosed with secondary bone cancer (after having a bilateral mastectomy last year for breast cancer) that is hormone-fed. It upsets me when I see people using children/getting pregnant as a selfish thing, to ultimately get something else (as mentioned before). To see a couple so positive and actually wanting a child, despite what they have to go through, makes me smile. Their daughter will be loved unconditionally and will be raised in a loving and caring home.
So, I would be grateful if you could pass on my message of support to this couple, that I think they are wonderful to face all of this adversity, and that their daughter is lucky to have parents that would go through all that just to bring her into this world.
