Re: the Advocate.com Kirchick exclusive posted March 20, 2008. Indeed, why not consider Senator McCain? I have voted Democrat from JFK to whomever; but honestly, I'm ready for a curmudgeon who has nothing more to lose! Because my son and his partner are established residents in Illinois, I have kept a close eye on Barack Obama's rise to the U.S. Senate. Believe me, I've watched the body language and I've listened to the rhetoric of this young man who is advantaged by one major civil rights victory achieved in 1967 without committing himself to strive for a similar victory today. From my personal message to Senator Obama in early March: "I've listened time and again to your words for changing so much ... politics that shut us out etceteras ... yet I wept to hear your own words in negative response to young people's inquiry regarding gay marriage (refer to think.mtv.com/02 Feb 08). In 1967, we rejoiced because (388 U.S. 1) Loving v Virginia ended all race-based restrictions on marriage in the United States. Now, a mere forty years later, a young man has the audacity to ask for my vote so he can become the President of the United States of America ... but I can not commit my vote, nor can I encourage others to do so, for this young man who is not committed to ending gender-based restrictions on marriage."
