Judy Garland among early Emmy winners
The 2001 Creative Arts presentation of the Emmy Awards in the Pasadena [Calif.] Civic Auditorium Saturday night got off to a great start for television shows of gay interest. American High, a documentary series that featured an openly gay student, won in the new Nonfiction Reality category for documentary shows (as opposed to game shows like Survivor); HBO's Wit, based on the play by lesbian Margaret Edson, won in the Picture Editing category; and HBO camp favorite Living Dolls: The Making of a Child Beauty Queen picked up an award for Outstanding Picture Editing. Gay icon Barbra Streisand took home three Emmys, in Music Direction, Sound Mixing, and Technical Direction, for her musical special Timeless. Will & Grace took home a pair of Emmys, in Cinematography and Art Direction. Storyline Entertainment's miniseries Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows stacked up three Creative Arts Emmys, the largest number of Emmys of any of the nominated movies or miniseries. The acclaimed show won for Outstanding Makeup Design, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding Hair Styling. Executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are up for six additional awards during next Sunday's prime-time Emmys broadcast on CBS.
