McKellen, Dench snag SAG nominations

Nominations for the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Tuesday morning, with gay-inclusive films like Iris and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (and the non-gay-inclusive A Beautiful Mind) dominating in most categories. Sir Ian McKellen was nominated for Male Actor in a Supporting Role, where he will compete against Hayden Christensen, who plays a troubled teen who briefly turns to hustling in Life as a House. Dame Judi Dench received two nominations, one for playing bisexual author Iris Murdoch in Iris (Female Actor in a Leading Role) and one for playing a lesbian with a lifelong secret in The Shipping News (Female Actor in a Supporting Role). The Ensemble category includes A Beautiful Mind (which costars out actor Anthony Rapp), Gosford Park (which contains a handful of gay characters), and The Lord of the Rings.

On the television side, Alan Ball's Six Feet Under was acknowledged for its ensemble as well as for Peter Krause's performance. The awards will be presented March 10.
