GLMA releases new guidelines for treating gay patients

The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association has released a new set of guidelines for doctors and other health care providers for the treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and intersex patients. Titled "Creating a Safe Environment for LGBTI Patients," the free 18-page guideline booklet covers a broad range of issues, including how to create a welcoming office environment, educate office staff on gay issues, conduct culturally sensitive patient interviews, and develop knowledge about specific health issues affecting the gay community. The guidelines also include a sample intake form and a list of additional educational resources.

"What we've learned is that almost everyone in our field wants to provide the best health care possible to everyone," said GLMA president Kenneth Haller Jr. "Unfortunately, not everyone understands how to do that when it comes to LGBTI patients. GLMA has now provided a tool that can help develop this kind of competency. It is important, and it's free."

Copies of the guidelines can be requested online at www.glma.org or by calling (415) 255-4547.
