California researchers study timing of AIDS therapy

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have launched a study to determine whether it's best to immediately offer HIV-positive people visiting emergency rooms who have AIDS-related complications antiretroviral drugs or to hold off on anti-HIV therapy until treatment for the opportunistic infection has been completed, The Sacramento Bee reports. The study is being conducted through the university's newly formed AIDS Clinical Trials Unit. The unit--housed at the Center for AIDS Research, Education, and Services--currently has 10 clinical trials under way for HIV-positive adults. For more information about the unit, go online to www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/actu.
