Scissor Sisters, Will Young, Morrissey on U.K. pop charts
While gay-inclusive New York pop combo the Scissor Sisters returned to the top of the U.K. album chart Sunday, the singles chart welcomed a new number 1 single, "Lola's Theme," a club favorite by crossover dance duo Shapeshifters. The wife of Briton Simon Marlin, one half of Shapeshifters, inspired the title of "Lola's Theme"; Swedish-born Max Reich completes the group. The track features a sample from late soul singer Johnnie Taylor's 1982 U.S. R&B chart hit "What About My Love" and vocals by Cookie of the London Community Gospel Choir. Shapeshifters beat former S Club member Rachel Stevens to the chart summit, as her "Some Girls" arrived at number 2. The charity single for Sport Relief, a spin-off of Comic Relief, is a new song, not a cover of the Rolling Stones' 1978 album title track. Usher's "Burn," number 1 for the past two weeks, fell to number 3. Rapper J-Kwon's "Tipsy" arrived on the chart at number 4, while English R&B star Jamelia's "See It in a Boy's Eyes," cowritten with Coldplay's Chris Martin, was new at number 5. Morrissey's "First of the Gang to Die," the second single from his new album You Are the Quarry, entered at number 6.
With last week's chart-topping album, McFly's Room on the 3rd Floor, falling to number 3, the way was clear for the Scissor Sisters' self-titled set to return to the top. Also rebounding was the Streets' A Grand Don't Come for Free, which moved up one place to number 2, and Snow Patrol's Final Straw, which jumped 10 places to number 6 as the album's latest single, "Spitting Games," entered the singles chart at number 23. Out pop idol Will Young's Friday's Child also bounced back with a six-place jump to number 8. The set's title track and latest single debuted last week at number 4 and slid to number 17.
