Gay Days at Disneyland lures bears--and youth and families

Organizers for the unofficial Gay Days at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., have announced a bevy of groups that will be hosting gatherings during the seventh annual event October 1-3.

The Trevor Project, which runs a 24-hour hot line for gay and lesbian teens, will host a free breakfast for gay youth as well as an in-park scavenger hunt and a group lunch. "The Trevor Project is thrilled to once again be involved with Gay Days," said Trevor's executive director, Jorge Valencia. "While the focus of our work is on saving the lives of GLBT and questioning teens, it's also important for young gay people to get together and celebrate life as well."

The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Family Services Program will host several gatherings over the weekend, including a family photo shoot, two lunches, and a scavenger hunt for kids. BearsLA will bring fur-loving men together for a lunch on Saturday and a ride on Grizzly River Rapids at Disney's California Adventure on Sunday.

The meetings are just part of the increasing line-up of activities happening over the weekend. The Gay Days themselves are Saturday (at the original Disneyland park) and Sunday (at Disney's California Adventure), when gay visitors will mix in with regular parkgoers, many wearing red shirts to stand out in the crowd.

Other highlights of the weekend include the opening Wonderland party Friday night at the Hilton Anaheim, with DJ Ray Rhodes and drag diva hostess Momma; the centerpiece Kingdom dance party with Thunderpuss DJ Chris Cox at the Disneyland Hotel on Saturday night; group photos taken both days by Disney photographers and sold in the respective parks; and the Motorola Gay Days Info Center, which will offer party tickets, T-shirts, the Gay Days pin, and the Gay Days Guide. The info center will be open all weekend in the Pacific Room inside the Sierra Tower of the Disneyland Hotel.

Additional information and details on how to get discounted hotel rooms and park tickets are available on the Gay Days Web site, www.gayday2.com.

Gay Days at Disneyland, started in 1998, last year attracted an estimated 25,000 gays and lesbians from California and across the country, organizers said. This year, organizers expect over 30,000 at the event.
