Darren Star cooks up Kitchen Confidential for Fox

After turning New York restaurants into a chic setting for Sex and the City, Darren Star, the out creator of the hit HBO comedy, is taking a closer behind-the-scenes look at posh eateries in Kitchen Confidential. The half-hour project, based on Anthony Bourdain's book, has landed at Fox Broadcasting with a script commitment plus a six-figure penalty. New Line, which has the rights to the book, is on board to produce Kitchen through New Line TV, along with Darren Star Productions and 20th Century Fox Television. A search is under way for a writer to adapt the book to the small screen. Star will supervise the writing of the pilot script and will executive-produce; he also is attached to direct. In his fast-paced memoir Kitchen Confidential, Bourdain, executive chef at brasserie Les Halles in New York, draws an honest, gritty picture of life behind the scenes in a restaurant kitchen, covering topics including chef's training, personalities, food prep, cooks' lifestyles, and the art of running a successful restaurant.

Kitchen extends Star's relationship with 20th Century Fox TV. Last year, he cocreated and executive-produced the 20th Century Fox TV-Imagine TV dramedy Miss Match for NBC. Star won a Best Comedy Series Emmy in 2001 as part of the producing team of Sex.
