Trend-setting U.S. architect Philip Johnson, whose glass skyscrapers helped define America's urban landscape, died Tuesday evening at his home in New Canaan, Conn. The out designer was 98.

Trend-setting gay U.S. architect Philip Johnson, whose glass skyscrapers helped define America's urban landscape, has died at age 98, his lawyer's office said on Wednesday. Johnson was at home in New Canaan, Conn., when he died on Tuesday evening, according to the office of attorney Joel Ehrenkranz. The cause of his death was not immediately available. Johnson was a prolific designer whose creations include the so-called Glass House, a transparent box, in Connecticut; the New York State Theater; New York City's Asia House; and the American Telephone & Telegraph Building in Manhattan, which is known as the Chippendale Building and is now owned by Sony.
