The full
California senate will vote on a bill that would require
LGBT history to be added to state textbooks now
that the proposal has passed the senate education
committee. The measure, which won approval Wednesday,
would also prohibit curricula with a bias against gays.
"Today's vote marks another important step
toward ensuring that students have the benefit of a
positive and well-rounded education and one that
promotes safety and respect in their schools," Sen. Sheila
Kuehl, the bill's author, said in a statement.
Added Equality California executive director
Geoffrey Kors, who testified in favor of the bill: "It
is vital that textbooks and other educational
materials that our students study reflect the society in
which they live in order to increase their knowledge,
tolerance, and respect for our diverse world."
