Uganda archbishop
Henry Luke Orombi contributed to the August-September
issue of the Anglican journal First Things
with the prediction that "the younger churches of Anglican
Christianity will shape what it means to be Anglican,"
pulling the church out of what he calls a global
crisis. Until then, he says, he will refuse to share
the floor of the upcoming Lambeth Conference with more
liberal factions of the Anglican Communion.
Orombi levels
criticism at the Episcopal Church USA, the American branch
of Anglicanism, expressing his disagreement with its more
liberal interpretation of Scripture. He is especially
critical of the U.S. church's acceptance of LGBT
people. "The insistence from some Anglican circles
(mostly in the Western world) on esoteric
interpretations of Scripture borders on incipient Gnosticism
that has no place in historic or global Anglicanism,"
he writes in the journal.
He continues,
expressing the his belief that marriage is the union of one
man and one woman only. And while Orombi does not foresee
the dissolution of the Anglican Communion, he
expresses the need for the Episcopal Church to abandon
its liberal, "esoteric" policies. And he says he will
see to this end through acquiescence or force. (The
