The Reverend Al Sharpton and gay rights groups are working together in Arizona to back an antidiscrimination ordinance in Scottsdale, which would include protections for LGBT residents.

The city is considering a measure that would apply to local businesses, government contractors, and agencies, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. Along with the Arizona Transgender Alliance and Equality Arizona, the Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force are working with the state chapter of Sharpton's National Action Network to push the ordinance.

The proposal has also been endorsed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, Planned Parenthood, the state chapter of the National Organization for Women, and some Democratic lawmakers, the Journal reports.

Arizona currently does not have a statewide law to prevent discrimination against LGBT residents in housing or employment. (The Advocate)
