Marriage Ban
Stalls in Iowa House

An attempt to expedite a vote in the Iowa house regarding a measure that would ban same-sex marriage failed Tuesday.

An attempt to expedite a vote in the Iowa house regarding a measure that would ban same-sex marriage failed Tuesday. House minority leader Christopher Rants wanted a full debate on the bill, but his resolution to bypass preliminary procedures and accelerate a vote will likely die in committee this week, according to TheDes Moines Register.

Democrats were able to kill the resolution with a 50-46 vote along party lines. According to the article, Democratic lawmakers have avoided debate on the resolution while the state supreme court considers a lower-court ruling on Iowa's marriage law.

One Republican and three Democrats were absent and did not vote on the Resolution. An effort for the state senate to pass a similar bill is also likely to fail.

House majority leader Kevin McCarthy said that Republicans will use this vote as fodder in this fall's election, when all 100 house seats will be contested. (The Advocate)
