Considers Gay Marriage Ban

A Pennsylvania senate committee passed a proposal Tuesday on a 10-4 vote to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage and civil unions, according to the Associated Press. Titled the Marriage Protection Amendment, the measure would define marriage as only the union of one man and one woman and would prohibit civil unions.

The Associated Press reports that opponents tried to seek more hearings because the measure's wording could result in endangering the rights that gay and lesbian couples currently hold. Supporters say the measure would maintain gay and lesbian couples' current rights such as domestic-partner health insurance coverage and the ability to grant power of attorney.

A constitutional amendment requires approval from both the Pennsylvania house and senate in two consecutive sessions and ultimate approval in a statewide referendum, which could not be held earlier than next year. (The Advocate)
