Since Tuesday more than 1,000 people have signed the letter urging New Jersey state legislators to vote on and pass the marriage equality bill during the lame-duck session of the legislature.
According to Blue Jersey, initial signers include congressmen Frank Pallone, Steve Rothman, and Rush Holt and Newark mayor Cory Booker, followed by hundreds more Democratic leaders and residents of New Jersey.
The letter is being signed as some legislative leaders indicate reluctance to vote on the bill, as was widely expected before governor-elect Chris Christie, a Republican opposed to marriage equality, won office over incumbent Jon Corzine last month.
“We appreciate that this is a difficult issue for some state legislators,” says the letter. “But marriage equality is an idea whose time has come. We are confident that the voters will stand by those elected officials who do the right thing.”
Corzine has pledged to sign a marriage equality bill, but time is running out for advocates. Christie, who has vowed to veto the bill, takes office on January 19.
