The New Jersey senate will not vote on a pending marriage bill on Thursday as planned. The days of the current legislature are numbered, as is the amount of time left in office for outgoing Gov. Jon Corzine, who said he would sign the bill if it arrived on his desk.
Democratic senators Ray Lesniak and Loretta Weinberg told the New Jersey Star-Ledger that the bill would probably be introduced to the assembly judiciary committee first before the senate would vote.
Lesniak said that he still expects to vote on the marriage bill by the end of the session in January. In order for the bill to become law, it would have to pass before incoming governor Chris Christie takes office, as he has said he would veto it.
In order for it to pass in the senate, the bill would need 21 votes from the combined 17 Republicans and 23 Democrats who make up the voting body.
