Former congressman Harold Ford has expressed his interest in challenging one of the most pro-gay members of the U.S. Senate, Kirsten Gillibrand, for the Democratic nomination.
His possible candidacy has worried party leaders — Charles Schumer met with Ford earlier this month to dissuade him from running — as well as gay and lesbian voters, who are understandably concerned about Ford’s votes against marriage equality when he served as a congressman for Tennessee. While Ford voted twice for the Federal Marriage Amendment, Gillibrand supports repeal of both “don’t ask, don’t tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act.
Ford announced last week that he’s changed his position on same-sex marriage, but the move isn’t enough to keep the progressive group Brave New Films to release a video warning voters about this man, who the group calls “Ann Coulter’s Favorite Democrat.”
