The soon-to-be ex-wife of recently out rugby star Gareth Thomas says that while the end of her marriage was devastating, she has no regrets.
Jemma Thomas tells BBC Radio Gareth’s announcement didn’t catch her completely off guard. After he told her, “I think I’m gay,” Jemma says she replied, “I think you are.”
"It was very strange, my reply, because I'd never mistrusted him with a woman yet I never knew anything had been going on with a man either," Jemma Thomas said. "I had my suspicions and there were lots of rumors when he was much younger but there was never anything substantial for me to go on so I kind of just blocked it out and put it to the back of my mind.
"I knew that Gareth loved me so dearly and he never gave me any just cause or reason to think he was having an affair with another woman. He would always come home, he was a very caring, very passionate person and I didn't for one minute think it would have been another woman because I trusted him."
Jemma says that because she and Gareth had always been such good friends, she wishes he could have found a way to be honest with her sooner. But she also says she is thankful to have been married to him.
"We did have a great time. Gareth's a great person and he finally managed to come out and say who he is."
