There’s more to Joan Rivers than stand-up comedy, red carpet gaffes, and plastic surgery. Rivers will soon be exposed, warts and all, at a theater near you. IFC Films has acquired North American rights to the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, which premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film was helmed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg and received warm reviews when it bowed at Sundance, where it received the U.S. Documentary Editing Award. A Piece of Work not only offers a comprehensive look at the career of the envelope-pushing comic, going back decades to her early performances on Jack Paar’s show, but also delves into Rivers’s personal life, including the suicide of her husband, Edgar.
