Apple is removing applications deemed to be “overtly sexual” from its iPhone App store in response to customer complaints. Thus far, the affected number of applications adds up to 3% of the total number of applications in the store.
MacRumors.com reports on the removals, which have escalated since news broke late last week. Typically, about 100 applications are removed from the store each day, but that number appears to be skyrocketing in light of the indecency complaints.
“On Thursday, February 17th, however, this number shot up to 932 removals and peaked at nearly 4000 removals on Friday, February 18th,” reports MacRumors.com. “The high number of removals has continued over the weekend as Apple continues to clear out these newly blocked apps. In speaking with Apple, ChilliFresh found out that over 5000 apps were affected, which corresponds to AppShopper's stats as of Saturday, though the higher than normal rate of removals seem to be continuing. So far, the removals represent about 3% of the total number of apps in the App Store.”
The affected applications include novelties, adult-themed slide shows, and games, according to MacRumors.com.
