Time magazine offers a window on the life of Kampala-based lesbian activist Pepe Julian Onziema and her partner, who bravely live in repressive circumstances where, for a woman, “wearing a suit can be a death wish.”
Onziema is one of only about a dozen gay people who are publicly out in Uganda, according to Time reporter Glenna Gordon. Her partner, whom she met in a rugby club a few years ago, chose not to provide her name. Her partner’s father assaulted Onziema about a year ago when he saw them walking down the street together.
Both Onziema and her partner hope to marry one day, and they fear the potential bill that would impose harsh penalties on gay people and their allies in Uganda. Read more about their life here.
