Congressman Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania, an Iraq war veteran and one of the lead opponents of “don’t ask, don’t tell” on Capitol Hill, has written a compelling Politico op-ed calling for repeal of the military’s antigay policy.
Murphy writes, "My time in Iraq taught me that our military needs and deserves the best and brightest who are willing to serve. Gays and lesbians are serving with honor and valor in Iraq and Afghanistan—and have served in every previous conflict in U.S. history. Gay Americans have been killed in defense of our nation — fighting and dying for an institution that wouldn’t accept who they are. It’s time we let our troops be true to our American values and permit them to stop living a lie."
