House speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday she is confident that there will be enough votes in the chamber to lift the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military.
Pelosi's assertion at her weekly press conference comes days after a compromise on repeal language was agreed upon and added to the defense authorization bill. She did not directly comment on whether the vote would jeopardize any members of the House in the upcoming election, Roll Call reports.
The amendment is sponsored by Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Democrat from Pennsylvania. The vote is reportedly expected to take place on Thursday or Friday, in anticipation of the Memorial Day recess.
