Two Southern Oregon University students cite boredom, not homophobia, as their motivation for spraying a gender-neutral residence floor with antigay graffiti.
Blake Adkins and Kevin Novotny plan to issue a public apology and personal letter to students for vandalizing a residence hall at Ashland-based SOU, where many gay students live, according to the Mail Tribune of Medford.
Both men allege they did not know gay students lived on the residence floor and claim the antigay terms used were mere coincidence.
Authorities arrested Adkins and Novotny in April following the incident. The two students pleaded guilty to second-degree charges of criminal mischief, and both men paid $400 in fines.
Southern Oregon University is in the process of reviewing disciplinary actions for both men, including possible expulsion.
