Some 271 same-sex couples have married in Mexico City since a new marriage law took effect in the capital in March.
According to the Associated Press, the largest number of same-sex marriages took place in the first month of the new law. The overwhelming majority of those married were Mexican citizens, and slightly more gay than lesbian couples married.
“The city government says there have been 142 marriages between men and 129 between women in the four months since the law went took effect March 4,” reported the AP.
Mexico City is one of the world's largest cities, with a population in the metropolitan area approaching 25 million.
The supreme court of Mexico is weighing challenges to the Mexico City law, which will stay in effect until review is complete, likely later this summer.
