Nathan Quinones, the one time New York City Schools chancellor who helped to found Harvey Milk High School, died Sunday, July 25 of a stroke. He was 79.
Quinones was best known for his work with New York City schools, where he helped raise test scores and classroom learning conditions, according to The New York Times.
The Harvey Milk High School opened under Quinones's watch as a safe haven for LGBT students.
Eventually, Quinones resigned from his position as chancellor, after being criticized for seeking larger school budgets and not working well with the Board of Education.
