Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard (pictured) is suing a Roman Catholic cardinal for defamation after the cardinal said Ebrard bribed the Mexican supreme court to uphold a law allowing gay and lesbian couples to adopt children.
According to the Associated Press, Ebrard said the suit was filed to defend his honor and to stress the importance of Mexico's separation of church and state.
Cardinal Juan Sandoal Iniguez has "specific" proof to back up his claim and would only reveal it in court as evidence, said his spokesman, Guadalajara archbishop Antonio Gutierrez.
The supreme court has also condemned Iniguez's accusations.
