Australian diver Matthew Mitcham won the silver medal in the 1-meter springboard at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Sunday. The gold went to Canadian Alexandre Despatie.
After the competition, Mitcham, who is gay, compared Despatie to gay diving legend Greg Louganis, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
“I’m in completely in awe of him. I was a lot more confident with the event before I realized he would be competing in it,” Mitcham said. “I tried to keep up with him; it encouraged me to train harder, because I knew he would be incredibly difficult to beat.”
Despite his second-place finish on Sunday, Mitcham is a heavy favorite in the still-to-come 10-meter platform competition, in which he won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
