Channing Tatum will star as a seasoned stripper who takes a young newbie under his wing in Magic Mike, which has attractedErin Brockovich/Liberace director Steven Soderbergh.
Last year the Oscar-winning director had said his forthcoming biopic Liberace, starring Michael Douglas, would be his last film — possibly ever. But after discussing the stripper project with Tatum on the set of their movie Haywire, Soderbergh says he was sold.
"When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I’d ever heard for a movie," Soderbergh said in a statement. "I said I wanted in immediately. It’s sexy, funny, and shocking. We’re using Saturday Night Fever as our model, so hopefully we’re on the right track."
The film is loosely based on the year Tatum spent as a stripper when he was just 19 years old. “This was a wild and pivotal time in my life, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to go down the rabbit hole with Steven,” the actor said in a statement.
