The Tale of the Intersex French Bulldog

Bijou is an intersex 18-month-old French bulldog with both a huge clitoris and penile bone, and her condition is making her something of a medical marvel in Canada.

Bijou has two X chromosomes and is genetically female, even though she has deteriorated testicles and the penile bone. Intersex dogs, and other mammals such as people, have some genitalia of both sexes but are genetically one sex or the other. However, most intersex people and animals also carry something called the SRY gene, which develops testes — Bijou doesn't have the SRY gene.
