
A California organization is spending millions of dollars on a television advertising campaign, hoping to open “hearts and minds” to same-sex marriage, according to The Sacramento Bee.
The 60-second advertisement, coordinated by Equality California, will begin to air Thursday in Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Palm Springs. The advertisement shows a traditional wedding ceremony, with a flower girl, a groom, and a large crowd. A guest trips the bride as she marches down the aisle, and text appears on the screen: “What if you couldn’t marry the person you loved?”
“The long term goal is to have the majority of Californians support the freedom to marry -- to change the climate here,” Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, told the Bee.
To complement the advertising campaign, volunteers will reportedly hold house parties, canvass neighborhoods, and give speeches.
The legislation to allow same-sex marriage in California rests with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has said he will veto it, as he did with a similar bill two years ago.
Couples who register as domestic partners in California receive almost every right guaranteed to spouses, but the state’s domestic partnerships are not universally recognized in other parts of the United States, and domestic partners are not eligible for veterans' and Social Security benefits.
