Broun to Reintroduce Federal Marriage Protection Amendment

Republican congressman Paul Broun of Georgia announced Tuesday that he plans to submit a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. He cited the California supreme court's May 15 ruling in favor of gay marriage as the reason for his action, according to The Southern Voice.

"What the activist judges in California have shown is that the traditional definition of marriage is under assault by a cadre of lawyers and judges who hold the will of the voters in contempt," Broun said in a press release. "As a result, a political and social question that should be resolved at the ballot box is being imposed by a handful of liberal elites."

Broun, a freshman representative elected in 2007, is currently seeking reelection. (The Advocate)

Mr Edwards, Mr "Bob" Obviously, your intimate knowledge of the homosexual is the reason for your comments. It seems clear the you've done exhaustive research on the topic, and those of us who actually are gay have spent our entire lives under the mis-impression that this is natural for US. It's very easy to fall back on stereotypes and uninformed opinion, as the two of you have done. Most gays will tell you that their sexual feelings are very natural for them. I, for one, never sat there saying "hmm ... girls? ... guys? ... girls? .. nope, I think, just for laughs that I'll decide to be a social outcast, subject to scorn and ridicule, and in many cases violence and prejudice, and be attracted to guys. Yes, that's it. Now, what to have for dinner?" Gentlemen, those kinds of conversations and decisions just don't happen. Just because you don't understand it, and can't imagine anyone naturally being gay does not mean that you're right.

Never in the history of the world has anyone been born homosexual. That's a scientific fact.

Well, since you referenced me, I should respond. was born gay and it cannot be changed. Why should I be discriminated against because of that? Homosexuality is NOT about behavior. Is your sexuality about what you do? I can be celibate and still be gay. And since WHEN should the laws of our land take into account religious beliefs? What happened to separation of church and state? Marriage is more than a religious institution, it's a civil one....and all citizens should have the same civil rights. (That's how I read our Constitution and Bill of Rights) And whether it's blacks or gays, the issue is about equal rights under the law. If your church doesn't want to recognize the marriage, that's fine. But your church should not be allowed to dictate to the entire population. You really should do some research on your own and not just listen/believe everything your ultra-conservative preachers and politicians are feeding you.

    Comment:

Congressman Broun is speaking for the vast majority of Americans. Keep in mind that this rouge court in California overruled the will of the people. What is the will of the people? It is for marriage to remain what it always has been-- a special institution of one man and one woman, blessed by God, to love one another and to have children and raise them with love. The gentleman at the top of the page compared the civil rights movement with the movement to legalize homosexual marriage. This is an insult to African Americans who came to this country in chains, were enslaved and were treated horribly. Keep in mind that the civil rights movement was about working to stop people from being discriminated against due to their race- something that is beyond one's control that they are born with. African Americans are African Americans because they were born that way. Homosexuals are homosexuals because they behave that way.

I wonder if some of those who yell so loud about "activist judges" today would feel the same about the judges of a previous generation who interpreted the laws and paved the way for black civil rights? That's how it happened in the 50s and 60s...but somehow, those judges are viewed as visionary, progressive and courageous. What's different?

Don't these overzealous jerks have anything better to do than worry about who marries whom? Why doesn't this idiot use his energy to introduce legislation that would stop our misguided involvement in Iraq which, besides killing and wounding Americans and countless Iraqis, is bankrupting this country. Congressman Broun is a buffoon who serves no purpose whatsoever other than driving wedges between people and promoting his agenda of intolerance and bigotry. He probably cruises men's rooms in his spare time. Leonard Myron Edgewater, New Jersey

Yet another ignorant fool from GA has decided to jump on the band wagon. I am embarrassed to be a native Atlantan. At least the judges in CA, MA, NJ and others are actually reading the Constitution and agreeing that you cannot create a group of second class citizens. We must do whatever is necessary to retain the positive and forward movement which we have achieved-at all costs! Maybe one day we will live in a world where we are all truly equal!

    Comment:

I guess Cngsman Broun didn't realize that the majority of the "liberal elite" justices serving on the California Supreme Court are Republican appointees. "Activist judges" has become the battle cry of the losers. Funny how a congressman doesn't seem to understand the differences between the legislative and judicial processes; legislative makes the laws, judicial interprets them. That's exactly what happened in this case.
