Advocate Editor in Chief Stepping Down

Longtime Advocate editor Anne Stockwell announced Friday that she is stepping down from the magazine's top position as editor in chief, effective in mid June. Veteran journalist and former Advocate news editor Jon Barrett will take her place, according to here! Networks, which is in the process of acquiring The Advocate and its sister publications.

Stockwell rose through the ranks during her 15-year tenure and as editor in chief has overseen the magazine's 40th anniversary and a redesign. On May 10, Stockwell accepted an award for Outstanding Magazine -- Overall Coverage by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, an honor never before given to an LGBT publication. She will continue to contribute to the magazine as editor at large and plans to contribute to Out and Out Traveler in the future.

"It's been an honor to help build and grow The Advocate," Stockwell said. "This remarkable magazine is essential to our community. I'm proud to be part of its tradition."

Barrett is slated to take Stockwell's position in June. Prior to returning to The Advocate, Barrett worked for O at Home, O the Oprah Magazine, Cargo, and Real Simple.

"The Advocate has always mirrored the needs of its readership, whether that meant advancing the explosive push for civil rights in the 1960s, documenting the heady liberation of the 1970s, or assuming the serious -- and necessary -- mantle of newsmagazine in the 1980s and '90s," Barrett said in a statement. Comment:

Perhaps a male editor can give gay men equal time in the Advocate. I have found the articles so superficial in recent years, and so womyn-slanted that I have given up on reading it.

Usually pretty good, but for news I turn now to 365gay.com. I would like to see more coverage of gay women's interests if that is possble. Thanks and to the new editor, please keep up the good work!

Let's hope Mr. Barrett will hire better writers and assign more substantial stories that better reflect the nation's LGBT community. I think the 40th anniversary redesign was a disaster. The magazine has become all flash and very little substance.

as the world turns all must move on, nice job, but i am sure it ca only improve now that another takes the reins and sheds a new outlook taking away the dreary past year. just maybe we can see a much needed "mans" section, which the advocate has been lacking and was starting to dull monthly, great luck to the new chief we are looking for great improvements

OK, I was beginning to really love the tradition of having female editors in chief for the best gay and lesbian rag ever. I don't always like the Advocate, but I certainly have loved it, especially since the women took over. No offense to Mr. Barrett, but he has some pretty big heels to fill.

She did a good job. The Advocate has come a long way since the old days. I'm glad The Advocate is still here, reliable and better than ever, even without the pink pages! (-:

Best of luck to Anne Stockwell as she pursues her plans for the future. And hearty congratulations to Jon Barrett as he takes on his responsibilities as Editor in Chief of Advocate. I first met Jon in the weeks after 9/11 when he interviewed our family in preparation of his book Hero of Flight 93: Mark Bingham. He is a thorough researcher and a fine writer. Jon will be a genuine asset to Advocate as Editor in Chief.
