Antigay Activists Attack Czech Pride

About 20 people were injured in a tear gas attack at the Czech gay pride parade Saturday in the city of Brno, according to Agence France-Presse.

The attack caused the planned two-hour parade to halt after about 20 minutes. The parade route had already been shortened after right-wing protesters threw eggs and fireworks into a crowd of participants gathering for the parade, AFP reported, but the attack ended it. Police ended up detaining 15 people and charging three with breaching the peace. After the tear gas attack, two people required emergency medical treatment, and one police officer collapsed and was hospitalized.

The event was the nation’s first gay pride observance. The parade had about 500 participants and several hundred spectators. (The Advocate)
