Right-Wing Group Urges McDonald's Boycott Over Support of Gays

The American Family Association called on its members to boycott McDonald's over the company's support for the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

According to the conservative Christian organization's website, the boycott "is not about hiring homosexuals .... It is not about homosexuals eating at McDonald's .... It is not about how homosexual employees are treated.

"It is about McDonald's, as a corporation, refusing to remain neutral in the culture wars. McDonald's has chosen not to remain neutral but to give the full weight of their corporation to promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage," the site went on to say.

McDonald's recently gave a donation to the chamber and was invited to have a company representative sit on the organization's board. It stands by its support of the chamber.

"We have a well-established and proud heritage of associating with individuals and organizations that share our belief that every person has the right to live and work in their community free of discrimination," McDonald's global chief diversity officer, Pat Harris, said in a press release.

AFA has perviously boycotted Disney, Ford, Proctor & Gamble, and Kraft Foods and a threatened boycott of Wal-Mart. (The Advocate)

I'm curious, why is that many of you on this posting think it's just fine for a corporation (or an individual for that matter) to promote a cultural position that has nothing to do with the core business, but when another group (many of them customers) disagree with that position you immediately revert to name calling? The AFA simply asked McDonalds not to support a lobbying organization that has actively worked against the historical and traditional definitiion of marriage. They explicitly said it's not about employment discrimination or anything else. It's simply a bit of common sense. If you promote your business and image as "Family" business and "Kid Friendly", why would you financially support an organization that is attempting to redefine the definition of a term and a tradition that is an underpinning of culture since the beginning of recorded history?

How vindictive can you get? It's an absolute disgrace. If these people are really Christians they can focus their efforts on things which a real "Christian" would do, if you're going to boycott a fast food chain, make it about something worthwhile, not a vindictive effort to undermine other people's rights. Say, the treatment of animals by fast-food chain's slaughterhouses? Oh no, that's something Jesus himself might have done.

With so many corporations deciding to drop bigotry and prejudice from their policies, the right wingers will soon have no place to shop. At least they can buy Exxon's over priced gas. They will always practice their prejudices at Exxon. I will not ever change my buying habits to please the haters or to fight them. They are irrellevant in my opinion and as more people realize these right wing radicals are losers in a losing cause, the more people will stop listening to them. These people give all religion a bad name.

Actually, when the "Christian Coalition" threatened to boycott Disney because of Gay Days a few years back, I remember reading that Disney's attendance afterward actually INCREASED as a result. So, I'm hoping McDonald's revenue will do the same. Thank You Pat Harris, for siding for equality and saying "NO" to the backward religious fanatics who want to live in the past.

Well, just look how successful their boycott of Disney has been. Not. They tried protesting Gay Days in Orlando, but no one paid any attention to them. Then they called for a boycott (and Pat Robertson predicted god would send a hurricane to wipe them out). Hmmm, still no luck. So, sure...take on McDonald's. Good luck with that.

These groups are so pathetic. "American Family Association", "Focus on the Family", "Concerned Women of America"... what a truly sad bunch. Go ahead, boycot McDonald's - if you really think they care, you're even more delusional than you've proven to be. As people like Jesse Helms die or fade away and the younger generation comes into its own, it's going to be a bitter pill for them to swallow when this country starts becoming more progressive in terms of gay rites. Maybe then they will do something novel - like getting a life.

The American Family Association is simply pathetic for going after McDonald's. Let them call for a boycott...who cares, really? McDonald's is such a big corporation, the few fools, if any, who follow the boycott will not make a difference. Congrats to McDonald's for standing by its decision.

Considering that the vast majority of American Family Association members tend to be morbidly obese rednecks, I find it amusing to think that a single one of them are actually going to pass up their daily Big Mac and Super Sized fries.
