Heineken USA announced Monday that filmmaker Thomas Gustafson received the Heineken Red Star Award at the prestigious Outfest Film Festival on Sunday for his film Were the World Mine.
Grey’s Anatomy actor T.R. Knight will present the award.
It is the first time the Heineken Red Star Award has been presented to an Outfest film.
Were the World Mine is a musical set in a high school where one student discovers he has the power to turn those around him gay.
Gustafson is the fifth recipient this year of the Heineken Red Star Award, which was created in 2007 to recognize and celebrate the achievements of today’s most progressive and gifted directors in independent film.
“The Heineken Red Star Award recognizes originality, innovation, and vision in film and is demonstrative of our continued commitment to supporting and fostering unique film experiences,” said Pattie Falch of Heineken in the company’s press release. “We congratulate Thomas on receiving the Heineken Red Star Award, as he clearly shares our passion for independent thinking and self-achievement.”
The Heineken Red Star Award will be presented at a total of 10 film festivals throughout the country this year.
In December, Gustafson and other Red Star Award recipients from film festivals around the country will gather in Los Angeles as Heineken celebrates their collective accomplishments and showcases the films. (The Advocate)
