Over 1,000 Daily Papers Announce Gay Weddings

More than 1,000 newspapers across the United States now accept announcements for weddings or commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples, an increase from only 69 publications in 2002. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation made the announcement Monday, six years after The New York Times accepted its first same-sex wedding announcement.

According to GLAAD, this year will be the first that every daily newspaper in nine states and the District of Columbia will print announcements for gay and lesbian couples. However, fewer than a third of the 1,049 newspapers actually have printed an announcement because they have yet to receive a request. The organization has a list of participating newspapers at GLAAD.org/Announcing Equality. (The Advocate)

    Comment:

Add the "Monterey County Herald" in CA to your list. We published our wedding announcement this July and were thrilled with the community response. It is wonderful to feel society respond positively to our marriages; marriage really is about society and not our personal committment to each other. Publishing these annoucements celebrates our relationship and also creates opportunities to continue important discussions about civil rights (beyond our circle). The support we gotten has been amazing. Speaking to the gay couples I know who have also married, beautiful things are happening with other people who get involved in their wedding preparations and events. Everyone KNOWs how to respond to weddings and marriages and they are doing so in the most loving ways imagineable. (Like not charging our friends for their buttoneires after finding out they have been together for 32 years, saying, "You've waited long enough!").
