Maddow Gets Prime-Time Show on MSNBC

Maddow Gets Prime-Time Show on MSNBC

Air America radio host and television commentator Rachel Maddow will have her own show on MSNBC starting September 8. Her show will air at 9 p.m. following Countdown With Keith Olbermann. Olbermann broke the news Tuesday on the liberal news website Daily Kos.

Dan Abrams, who was hosting Verdict during that time slot, will act as NBC's chief legal correspondent and will be a daytime anchor for MSNBC, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. She may be the first openly gay woman to host a prime-time television show.

Maddow, 35, is a Rhodes scholar with a Ph.D. in political science. She also has a background in activism on such issues as prison reform and the AIDS crisis. She currently hosts The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America radio and has frequently served as Olbermann's guest host. (The Advocate)

Caught in the political crossfire
An Advocate.com exclusive posted June 16, 2006
After his Democratic opponent appeared on Rachel Maddow’s Air America show in May, Ohio congressman Bob Ney tried to derail his campaign by painting him as a radical for talking to the openly lesbian radio host, whom he deemed a “cross-dressing lesbian” and a “transgender king.” Now Maddow responds.

keith Olberman ,cris mathew and Rachel Maddows are my favourite. You go rachel. I am very disappointed with msnbc pulling keith and cris from their show. i guess i would only be watching msnbc when rachel is on. I dont see Fox and C.N.N pulling any of their anchors off because they seems to be democrat. why dont they take pat Buchannan off too.

Rachel Maddow is AWESOME. I so enjoy listening to her on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" and less frequently on "Hardball with Chris Matthews". This woman is brilliant, erudite, articulate and very easy on the eyes to boot! Nope. I'm gay but a sexy lesbian is a sexy lesbian anyway you look at her. :) Way to go Rachel. I am eager to see and hear more from you. Your intellect is surpassed only by your charm and your it. ALL THE BEST!

You go, girl! I became hooked on Countdown during the writer's strike and Maddow's appearances (and guest hosting) were always welcome, informative and entertaining. As a gay man who loves strong, insightful and hilarious women, I commend MSNBC for their choice and Keith Olbermann for his taste.

Good for her. It's about time an intelligent, highly qualified gay person gets a prime time slot on TV. There are enough right-wing idiots who get a talk show on TV, so it's nice to see an out lesbian, who is fair minded and balanced, get a show too

Go for it, Rachel!!! I'm DELIGHTED at this development! Not only is she supremely qualified, but this is another instance where an LGBT person can be seen by mainstream America, and be someone to whom they can relate! I'm a daily viewer of MSNBC and thoroughly enjoy Keith Olbermann. I especially like when Rachel appears on the program. Now with a program of her own, following his, I can watch one right after the other. Talk about the best of both worlds!! Congrats, Rachel.

Indeed this is great news for our community. I have found Rachel's style to be one of the most "fair & balanced" (lol) news presentations available. I do hope viewers will tune in and that she will be as aggressive in getting at the Truth as those so-called loud-mouth "journalists" on other networks.

  • Finding the Silver Lining in Defeat
Three weeks ago, like many LGBT Americans, I woke up with, to say the least, mixed feelings. The euphoria of Barack Obama’s election and the expansion of the pro-LGBT majority in Congress was tempered by sadness and anger at our devastating losses in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, and, of course, California. The silver lining of these defeats has been a renewed focus nationwide on the issue of marriage equality.
  • Separation of Sundance and State
In 2009, Sundance will celebrate 25 years of bringing together international cinema and a variety of cultures in Park City, Utah. But with California's gay community reeling from the passage of Prop. 8, activists and filmmakers are suggesting a boycott of the festival and theater chain Cinemark, whose CEO donated a substantial sum to the marriage ban's campaign. But just how realistic is a boycott of an entire state?
  • Democratic Supermajority No Guarantee for Gay Progress

Although thousands of individuals, organizations, and businesses donated to the Yes on 8 campaign, not one Fortune 500 company is among those names. In what may well be a first, Dr. Phil told the audience he would be keeping his opinions to himself.
