Gay Aussie Diver Breaks Chinese Streak

Gay Aussie Diver Breaks Chinese Streak

After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the three-meter springboard finals earlier this week, out Australian diver Matthew Mitcham took home the gold in the 10-meter platform competition, preventing the Chinese from taking gold in all eight diving categories.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Mitcham bounced back with an impeccably timed final dive in last night’s competition, earning four perfect 10's from the judges, pulling ahead of the competition’s favored winner, Chinese diver Zhou Luxin.

Luxin had been leading Mitcham going into last night’s finals by more than 30 points. But he faltered on his last dive, blowing his entry, according to the Times, and giving Mitcham an opportunity to clinch the gold.

"It's going to take a while to sink in," Mitcham told the Associated Press, fighting back tears. "My cheeks hurt from smiling. My face hurts from the chlorine. My legs are sore from jumping up and down. I'm in pain and I'm tired. But I'm so happy."

The win marks a huge turnaround for the 20-year-old Australian diver, who earlier this week finished 16th out of 18 competitors in the three-meter semifinals.

Mitcham is the first openly gay Australian to compete in the Olympics. His coming-out was well documented in the Australian press when he applied for financial aide to help pay for his boyfriend to join him in Beijing for the Games.

“I just want to be known as the Australian diver who did really well at the Olympics,” Mitcham told The Advocate in an interview with the magazine last month. “It’s everybody else who thinks it’s special when homosexuality and elite sport go together.”

First of all, hats off to Matthew. I live in the United States, and was pulling for all things American. Nevertheless, his performance was brilliant, and worthy of the gold medal. And the fact that he is openly gay gives me such a sense of pride. It proves that greatness has nothing to do with ones sexuality. Something, intelligent folks already knew. That said, we love you Matthew, and wish you continued success.

By far the greatest thing about this is Matthew's demonstration of his own pride in who he is. Being open about being gay and having a partner before going to the Olympics is truly brave and worthy of respect and praise. That he has also proven to be a champion topples all the myths that being an openly gay athlete and being successful is impossible. The reward for his courage was having his partner present as he accepted the cheers of the world for his stunning victory.

I'm turning 20 this coming winter and still struggling with my sexuality in the social context but what Matthew Mitcham has been through, the way he came to the olymbics and accomplished really gives me hope and inspiration. His success really nails the positive messsage to the LGBT community, especially the youths that embrace the way you are, be strong, courageous, and try really hard; things will have wonderful results.

Pinch me - is it real? An out Olympian - and a gold medalist. Just shows that coming out is an empowering thing, not a career ruining move.

Way to go, Matthew! I tear up everytime I watch the diving and then the pure shock, joy, and thrill on your face at the realization of what you have accomplished not only for yourself but for every gay and lesbian athlete or couch athlete. I'm more impressed with your performance than Michael Phelps because of your humility, poise, and grace.

@ Budi from Jakarta, 08-23-08 8:12 PM: The picture IS of Matthew Mitcham, dumb a s s. The picture is of Matthew Mitcham of Australia with his gold medal after winning the boy's platform diving event during day four of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre January 23, 2005 in Sydney, Australia. Do a Google Images search and you'll see. The Advocate just used an old picture, instead of a picture of him on the Beijing medal stand. In the meantime, don't make stupid claims just because it's what you think.

WAY TO GO MATTHEW! I am happy for you and could care less if you aren't a Yank--that's why I enjoy the Olympics--to see other athletes (and their hot bodies, but another story...) who are not Americans. This country is so ethnocentric. Anyway, I think NBC showed a quick glimpse of your boyfriend, holding an Australian flag, when you won the gold. Too bad NBC refuses to show any metal ceremony not including Americans. Diving is a major sport and should get complete coverage, regardless of the outcome. Congrats again!

I think it took incredible courage and strength for Matthew to come out before the competition. Coming out takes a lot of emotional energy, and it could have detracted from his performance, but thankfully it didn't. He is so strong.

Matthew, your win is a human triumph, a victory for personal commitment and passion. You won against a system that builds champions like an army of clones. You also won against your own doubts, and in so doing symbolise all of us. We are all so very proud of you.

Matt's performance was so flawless and so inspiring that I found myself rooting for him (along with the Americans, of course). I had no idea he was gay and out until now. I'm doubly thrilled for his courage and success! It takes grounding beyond his years to take on ambassadorship as the gay olympic diver just by coming out. But when he wins it feels like we all win with him a little bit. Thanks Matt!

Matthew now has an additional reason to be proud, not only for who he is personally, but he is now a "Golden Boy" of the Olympic Games! His very hard work, his competiveness, his determination for fairness in having his boyfriend at his side, has won him Victory. Congratulations to a super guy!
