Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle Talks About Democrats Against Gay Marriage

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle Talks About Democrats Against Gay Marriage

Florida's ballot measure to make it more difficult for judges to overturn the state's standing marriage ban has plenty of Republican supporters, but some prominent Democrats have declared themselves supporters of the measure. Fort Lauderdale mayor Jim Naugle is leading the pack of Democrats who support amending the state constitution to prohibit gay and lesbian couples from marrying, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

"Democrats, Republicans, or independents -- marriage is a religious institution, and government should define it to be between a man and a woman," Naugle told The Advocate, which he mistook for a legal publication when he returned the magazine's call for comment on his opposition to marriage equality.

Naugle held a press conference Tuesday with a group of Democrats, including pastors and local activists, who agree with social conservatives leading the charge for Amendment 2. He mentioned that key blocs in the Democratic Party, such as Latinos, African-Americans, and Catholics, are showing support for the amendment.

"We also know that a majority of black Democrats are supporting this -- like 60% -- based on religious reasons," he said. He also said Latinos, many of whom in the state are Catholic, will be an important group of voters to pass the amendment.

Yes2Marriage, an organization supporting the amendment, is targeting various groups in Florida -- including Democrats, African-Americans, Latinos, young voters, and senior citizens -- that may boost the yes vote to the required 60% to pass the measure.

"Our internal polling indicates that Democrats strongly support keeping marriage defined between a man and a woman," Yes2Marriage's John Stemberger said in a press release. "This is an issue that many Democratic families understand, and we believe they will support Amendment 2."

The Fort Lauderdale city commission, which Naugle heads as mayor, failed to pass a resolution opposing the amendment on Tuesday, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Vice Mayor Charlotte Rodstrom reportedly asked for a resolution from the commission, but none of the commissioners would offer the motion for a vote.

The amendment proposes to ensure that marriage maintains a legal union between a man and a woman, providing that "no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized." The opposition to the amendment says it would further limit arrangements like registered domestic partnerships, but Naugle says that won't happen.

"In Broward County we have a domestic-partnership ordinance, so [gay couples] can have many of the rights that straight couples have," he said. "No one's going to lose any benefits; seniors aren't going to be hurt. It just simply defines marriage between one man and one woman."

While some municipalities in Florida offer domestic partnerships, Florida does not offer a statewide registry.

In the past year Naugle has become a sharp critic of LGBT people. In 2007 he supported a $250,000 single-occupancy toilet, which he claimed would reduce gay sex in public restrooms. He also opposed moving the Stonewall Library into a city building. (Michelle Garcia, The Advocate)

"Democrat" Naugle has a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on his car, as well as a Clay Shaw (Republican for Congress who lost) bumper sticker. The guy loarthes everything the Democratic Party stands for. This was very shoddy reporting by the Advocate.

I agree with Andre! Money does speak, and speaks loudly! Always, when a large number of people come together for one cause it can make a difference. Take for instance the gas situation. When Americans began to drive less and more economically, the price of gas fell. The same would apply to Florida and other state and local governmenets where there is a significant gay population. Stop the millions of $'s and see what a difference it would make! Of course that's easier said than done but every little bit helps!

Naugle is not being honest. This law WILL NEGATE DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS in the State of Florida. The line "...no other legal union..." does EXACTLY that, and Naugle knows it!

Just for the record, Obama and Biden have publcly come out against the 3 anti-marriage amendments. Their positions are stated on the LGBT rights page on their website. So, in effect, Obama is in favor of same sex marriage in California, and Florida and Arizona. The people on this site who indicate that Obama shares similar views to the crazy homophobic Nagel (who is probably a closeted one of us) simply ignorant or misinformed.

If gays can't get married to the one they love, then straights shouldn't have the right to get a divorce. If marriage is between one man and one woman, then no one should be allowed to marry more than once and they have to stick with it until death do they part. And no remarriage upon widowhood.

Calling Naugle a Democrat is like calling Sara Palin a feminist. Democrats in Florida are nothing but Republicans in sheeps' clothing...they're Dixiecrats. But even nationally, the Dems are more than willing to throw us under the bus when its expedient. We are second class citizens within the Democratic party as much as the Log Cabin-ites are within the Republicans. Truly progressive third parties are out there. It's time we supported them.

According to your article, Mayor Naugle says "Democrats, Republicans, or independents -- marriage is a religious institution, and government should define it to be between a man and a woman." If we use that logic than there should not be any tax benefits or any other benefits that are sanctioned by any state or federal agency for a man and a woman who get married. We have separation of church and state in this country. Marriage should not be defined by religion.

GAY PEOPLE HAVE TO WAKE UP TO THE REALITY THAT DEMOCRATS WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE OUR VOTES FOR GRANTED AS LONG AS WE KEEP GIVING THEM OUR VOTE BUT ALLOW THEM TO IGNORE OUR FIGHT FOR EQUALITY ( OBAMA'S ABSOULTE IN-ACTION ON PROP 8 IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS). WE DEVALUE THE POWER OF OUR OWN VOTE BY VOTING FOR POLITICIANS THAT ONLY PAY US LIPSERVICE.

As a matter of historical record, for the Pilgrims who came on the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Colony, marriage was a civil matter, not a sacrament of the church. The leaders of Plymouth were Puritan Separatists who broke away from the Church of England. To claim that our "founding fathers" believed marriage was a religious sacrament is simply untrue. That Massachusetts should be the first state to legalize same-sex marriage is appropriate. All states and the federal government ought to do the same if our Constitution is to truly mean equality for all.

Naugle isn't saying anything that Obama and Biden haven' already said. They all agree that in this particular case religion and the law should go hand in hand. And, why are this paper and so many gay insitutions supporting these candidates? Even Marriage Equality are trying to tell us that Obama / Biden are really our friends.

An even better question of "Why do we keep supporting Democrats who only give us lip service?" is "Why do we continue to pay our taxes when we're just second class citizens?" I say we need to _ALL OF US_ change our W4s to the minimum withholding allowable - and let them see just how powerful we REALLY are - FINANCIALLY.

As others have stated, why don't we just stop spending our money in Ft. Lauderdale?! Money speaks and our money speaks volumes!! Ft. Lauderdale is very financially successful based on tourist dollars - a great deal of which comes from gay tourists. Since they don't support us, we shouldn't support them and that goes for all cities, states, and elected officials - Democrat or Republican!

Mayor Naugle is mistaken. Marriage is a civil institution, not a religious institution. The Greeks and Romans had marriage a long time before Christianity entered the scene. Marriage can be a religious ceremony for different religions, but that is neither here nor there with respect to its civil definition. Marriage equality is about the civil institution of marriage, it says nothing about what different religions should do about it. So, Mayor Naugle, last time I checked we had separation of church and state. So if your religion has particular views about marriage fine, but these should not be imposed by the state, for then the state would be favoring somebody's religion, namely yours, and that is unconstitutional. The religious argument against equality is a red herring. Civil institutions including marriage are the jurisdiction of the state. Simple as that. We go down the Mayor's road and pretty soon we will have laws to ban people from working on Sundays, etc. etc.

If memory serves me correctly, there is supposed to be a separation of CHURCH and STATE. Everybody is quick to jump on that bandwagon when it's convenient for them. My question, for all of the politcal genius' that are running this country and have such a hard time with the gay marriage concept, is this: Why do married (CHURCH) couples get so many laws (STATE and federal) that other couples can't have, if it's a Religious Institution??? Why can't I see my partner, while he's in the hospital, but a married man can see his wife, if it is a Religious Institution? What does religion have to do with taxes, medical, work, or any other benefits that married couples get, that we can't have. One word-HIPOCRACY!!! I got news for them. I'm going to Hell for a whole more than being gay.

If "marriage" is a religious institution, then the state has absolutely no business defining it in any way at all. If it's a religious issue, why does the state allow non-religous couples to marry. Naugle is clearly an idiot.

Interesting to see how a country like the US - a clear pioneer in the creation of political systems and Human Rights (or some would say) would fall to a retrograde concept such as this... And even more proof the Democratic party is the lesser of two evils - in spite of its pandering to the LGBT community when it is convenient... Question is, when will the gay community take a stand and move out of the 'new South Beach' (taking their 30% higher income with them as well?

Ft. Lauderdale mayor Jim Naugle is a Democrat in name only and a total ass entirely. His campaign re public toilets and supposed rampant gay sex on beaches (which their own police admit was never a problem) is interesting in that it shows a preoccupation with gay people and gay sex. I wouldn't be surprised if this nutjob is found to be paying off a "male massage therapist" one of these days and gets outed for a self-loathig closet queen. I feel bad for Ft. Lauderdale - it's a great place actually, I think better than Miami - but they do seem to have a very ineffective political support system for GLBT people. How quickly they forget that GLBT people were the ones who kept pumping in a lot of revenue after their hurricane a few years ago. Perhaps when they lose enough money, they will wake up.

When Florida's Amendment 2 passes in November (and it will), that will be the last straw for me. The message that the majority of the people in this state have been sending has been loud and clear: if you're gay, we don't want you here. Fine. After 22 years in Florida, it's time to go. I'm taking my education and earning power elsewhere. This state can rot in its own bigoted conservatism. There are better places to live.

What a contrast to Miami Dade County that passed a resolution to vote NO on Amendment 2. We have had enough of the homophobic Fort Lauderdale Mayor and cowardly Fort Lauderdale City Commission. Let's start a GAY TOURIST BOYCOTT of Fort Lauderdale. We can go to South Beach or Key West, both cities that appreciate our business and respect our lives. Maybe then these bigots will be voted out of office!
